Acupuncture for Coughs, Colds, and Sore Throats

What am I doing up in the middle of the night? Giving myself a treatment. Normally, I don’t treat myself. I go to an acupuncturist. But, we’re in a new town and I don’t have one yet so, here I am, with a sore throat, writing a blog in the middle of the night as I sit on my couch and wait for the needles to help my body do it’s magic. Note to people who get acupuncture treatments: don’t be like me and mess around with technology during your treatment! Rest!

Anyway, since I had my baby, I hadn’t thought a lot about acupuncture. I’d been on maternity leave and I was focused full-time on mom-stuff. It wasn’t until my baby got a cough around the holidays last year that I began to think about it again.

It was the middle of the night then too. My baby just started getting a pretty bad cough. I started to get worried. Then I remembered: I’m an acupuncturist! So I got up and treated my little one. Within a few minutes the cough was gone and breathing eased. It was amazing! I was left wondering what other moms who are not acupuncturists do. I asked my mom and she said they give their babies medications. Glad that’s not my first and only option for a midnight cough!

So now here I am tonight, with a sore throat. I’ve got to admit that if I’d just turned to acupuncture at the first sign of symptoms (or even before that as a way to stay well), and had been consistent with treatments, this whole middle-of-the-night thing wouldn’t be happening. My baby probably wouldn’t have gotten to the point of needing that magic holiday-time midnight treatment and I would be sleeping comfortably in my bed right now.

What is the take-away for anyone reading this? Get acupuncture at the first sign of a cough, cold, or sore throat and avoid being awake writing a blog about being sick (or, even worse, worrying about your sick baby) at 2:00 AM. Too late for that? Find an acupuncturist tomorrow morning then. Best wishes!
